ESPN Report 4.23.12: Abigail Meyer

ESPN Report for the Week of April 16, 2012
By Abigail Meyer

Monday April 16, 2012
We started out our week with Morning Work.  It was the first five day week we’ve had in a long time!  After Mr. C said morning announcements, we went right to work on Vocab for our story Cleaning Up America’s Air.  Then we read the story.  It was a “Time For Kids” article and turned out to be about how bad the air pollution is in America and that it contains smog and other gases.
After Morning Work, we got a head start on our Reading and Spelling packets.  Those who hadn’t finished their Animal Compare and Contrast Activities finished those up and we started presenting them to the class.  They were very creative!  It seemed that no time had passed at all when Ms. McKee said it was time for Math.  When we were all seated in Mrs. Rise’s classroom, our substitute teacher came in and introduced herself as Mrs. Bodenhamer.  We graded our math assignment from Friday then completed and corrected a Power Drill.  Mrs. Bodenhamer passed out the study guide for our math test on Thursday which was on fractions.  As we were working, she turned on music by Adele and handed out candy to those of us who were being quiet.  It was a fun Math class!
Next we went to Music.  We sang the songs for our musical on Thursday, “Gotta Be Jazz”.  After Music, we went to P.E. class.  We had a three person jump rope contest then played bowling pin games.  There were two teams and we tried to throw balls at each other’s bowling pins.  The first team to run out of bowling pins loses, leaving the other team as the winner.
We got back to class and graded Morning Work, then said a prayer, went to lunch and headed outdoors for a warm, sunny recess.  We got back to class and Ms. McKee read the story Lemonade War.  In the story, Evan got in trouble by the police officer for selling lemonade without a license.
All too soon, it was time for Science class.  We took notes on water vapor and humidity.  Next we went to Religion class, and made acrostic poems for the work TRINITY.  We got our study guide for Vocations Jeopardy tomorrow.
The day wasn’t over yet!  All of the 5th and 6th grade classes went down to the Gym for a rehearsal for our Musical which was less than three days away!  We did a pretty good job rehearsing but I think we missed afternoon announcements.  Everyone had a fun day then we went home to finish our homework.

Tuesday April 17, 2012
Just like any other day, we did our Morning Work and Mr. C said the morning announcements.  Ms. McKee lead us to the church for Mass.  Father Mike was the priest who said Mass.  During the homily, he did an experiment.  He took a flat piece of paper and a crumpled piece of paper.  The crumpled piece fell straight to the ground, but the flat piece floated in the air for a while before it fell.  He explained that we are the crumpled paper and our hearts fall straight into temptation, but with God’s help, we can resist it easier.
We went to Math class and graded our study guide from yesterday.  We also talked about what it would be like at Vocations Day tomorrow.  We left math class feeling happy because we didn’t have any homework since there was going to be a test on Thursday.  Usually we would go to Art Class after math since it was a Tuesday, but since our musical was on Thursday and the 5th graders would be at Prince of Peace for Vocations Day, we had to have a rehearsal today.  Mrs. Freemen, our music teacher, said that we did a much better job singing today than yesterday, but we were still pretty loud so we had to walk laps at recess, which wasn’t so fun.
In science class, after grading our Super Six, we found out that we had a vocab test on weather next Monday.  Mrs. Cotter let us study together for about ten minutes for our test.  It was time for vocation jeopardy when we got back in Ms. McKee’s classroom.  It was a fun, close game.  Later, Ms. McKee gave the kids who won the jeopardy game candy for winning.  The afternoon announcements came on and we said our prayer.  It was then S.H.O.P. and we went home, ready to go to Prince of Peace for Vocations Day the next day.

Wednesday April 18, 2012
Happy Vocations Day!  Before everyone left to the bus, we graded our spelling packet.  We hurried down to the bus and were on our way to Prince of Peace.  When we were there, the teachers called out each of our names and handed us nametags with our schedule on the back.  We went into the church and listened to a guitar player sing music about pharos and fruit and Moses.  After he was done Father Michel came to speak to us about vocations and his vocation.  He said that when he was younger, in 5th grade, he wanted to become a player for the Royals because he loved them.  Then, later in life, (when he was 28) he heard God calling and became a priest.  When he was done talking about his vocation Father Michel did Adoration to the Eucharist.  When he was
done, everyone went to their first activity.
A few hours later, when everyone had had lunch and done all of their activities, all of the St. Michael 5th graders met in Prince of Peace’s art room.  Once everybody was in the room, we walked over to the church.  The archbishop was there and talked about his different clothing he wore as an archbishop and answered a few questions from the students. Father Michel pointed out that we were running out of time so we went ahead and started mass.  Archbishop Naumann said a loooong homily and when mass was over we left and took the 15 minute drive back to St. Michaels.  Ms. McKee handed out stickers and cards from Vocations Day when we were in the classroom.  We also graded our reading packet.  Finally, after a long Vocations Day, everyone went home , ready for the musical tomorrow.

Thursday April 19, 2012
Today we had to catch up on Morning Work from Wednesday since we didn’t have much time to do it yesterday because of Vocations Day.  After announcements we went right to work on our spelling tests.  Everyone did a great job!  We took our reading test then got our stuff ready for our math test on fractions.  Mrs. Rise went over some things on the board before we started the test.  We ended switch early since everyone got done with their tests so quickly.  We went to music class after that.  When we got there Ms. McKee said we earned a letter since no one had their shirt untucked.  Yay!
In music we went over some songs we were having trouble on including Birdland and Route 66.  We went down to gym class and played kickball.  The red team won, seven to three.  We walked back to our classroom and graded D.O.L.  We said our prayers and walked down to the cafeteria. Special lunch today was Panera and it smelled delicious!  Recess was cloudy and a little windy, but we had fun.  Ms. McKee read a bit of The Lemonade War to us at D.E.A.R. time.  We went to science class and got a worksheet on weather.  Ms. Cotter offered us extra credit that was due the next day.  In religion we got a St. Augustine packet and read the legend of St. Augustine.  As soon as we were done we got ourselves dressed for the musical at 2:00.  It was great!  We would be coming back again at 7:00.
We filled out our planners at S.H.O.P. and went home.  We came back to school at 7:00 all dressed and ready for the musical.  Mrs. Freemen walked us over to the gym and we sang “Gotta Be Jazz” to our parents.  We went home and then the day was truly over.

Friday April 20, 2012
When we got to school today, everyone was in a hurry to finish their Power Drill and the journal for the week.  Ms. McKee put up our vocab words for next week’s story on the projector and we scribbled them down in our reading note books.  After that was finished, we read Amistad Rising which was about a man leading his friends out of slavery.  When that was done we lined up for computer.  We went to a website about Italy and got a worksheet with questions like “Where would you like to go in Italy?” or “What do they eat there?”  When we were finished we went onto Typing Pal and then played games.
We went to the classroom and Ms. McKee handed out our religion study guide on the Holy Trinity due on Monday.  We worked on it in partners.  Next it was time for library.  When we were done checking out books, Mrs. Walsh read Ghost Dog Secrets to us.   We got back from library at 11:15, said prayer, and then we went to lunch.  For special lunch we had Mr. Goodcents.  We had recess on the playground today, since it was a Friday.  After recess, we either finished our Power Drill or read a book.
Next it was time for math.  Mrs. Rise showed us how to fill out a check and answered our questions about Exchange City.  In science class we got a weather packet and turned in our extra credit from yesterday.  We worked on the packet the whole science class.  Ms. McKee had a chat with us about Alex’s Lemonade Stand and how we needed to get more lemonade and supplies for Wednesday’s school lemonade stand.  She gave us signs and we went around the school putting up the lemonade signs.  We planned to talk about the lemonade stand on the announcements, too.
We also made cards for the Knights of Columbus for donating the money for our school buses so that we could go to Prince of Peace on Wednesday for Vocations Day.  Mr. C came on the announcements.  He said the usual stuff and the prayer. He also said, “And until the middle of tonight it will be…FRIDAAAAAAAAAY!!”
